thecamp launches its 2019 cultural season

In 2019, thecamp is welcoming all kinds of people in the name of culture. Exhibits, talks, concerts, sports, evening classes, film clubs… there’s something for everyone. Starting on April 4, exploring the future means exploring culture, through a full program at a lively venue surrounded by nature, open to all citizens, designed for multidisciplinary encounters.

The arts are blooming this spring

The inclusive, fulfilling future we dream about — we can’t imagine it without cinema, painting, living arts, photography, music… we can’t imagine it without art, or without artists. More than ever, we need them to help us look beyond the borders of reality, of what we think of as possible or impossible, of what we think is visible or imaginary. We need to share their visions, their words, their capacity to look ahead, their desire to ask questions.

To do all that and more — with you! — we’re launching our first cultural season at thecamp, open to the general public starting on April 4. The program includes events that recur monthly or otherwise, so we can meet each other, learn, sing, dance, look, talk, doubt, be surprised, dream, go for a walk, play, dive in… and anything else that we can share among friends and family.

Supervised by Éric Viennot, game designer, co-head of thecamp's collaborative residency (Hive) and director of programming, and conceived by digital artist Djeff, the mission of this cultural season is to make a space for artistic visions from near and far, and to reveal the singularity of creators that allow us to interrogate our relationship with the world.

Resolutely aspiring to provoke new encounters — of people, and of artistic fields — our first cultural programming is multidisciplinary and accessible, aimed at an eclectic public that’s curious about exploring new genres: from visual arts, painting, photography and cinema, to emerging arts like video games and contemporary circus, along with encounters and intimate live shows with artists who are in residence or just passing through.

A lively venue, designed for culture

A base camp dedicated to exploring the future, thecamp was designed as a living space, where young students, creatives, entrepreneurs and local families can cross paths with professionals and innovators who’ve come to live a unique experience.

At this almost 10,000 m2 site surrounded by nature, accessible from 6pm during cultural programming, you’ll be able to freely discover surprising architecture, with access to (depending on the event): a bar for snacking on vegetarian tapas while drinking local wine and beer, a shop, a fablab, spots to relax under an open sky with a view of the Sainte-Victoire mountain, a stage under the stars, sports facilities (multisport field, pétanque, beach volleyball court…), the pine forest… It’s a truly refreshing green space, right at the doorsteps of Marseille and Aix-en-Provence!

So what’s the program?

We’ll give you more details as the season moves along, including with a monthly cultural agenda, but you’ll soon be able to:

  • Meet artists in residence at thecamp
  • Enjoy photography exhibits on campus
  • Join a game club dedicated to video games
  • Participate in a film club
  • Attend a variety of talks
  • Dance until the wee hours at concerts
  • Network at our Creative Connections nights
  • Try out or admire performances of modern circus arts
  • Discover creative surprises that the young participants of the collaborative residency Hive have in store
  • Laugh heartily — without making fun — during Fuckup Nights, evenings of stories about failure that we all need in order to move forward!
  • Attend evening classes
  • Play reading games
  • Try out singing in a choir
  • Tire yourself out playing team sports
  •  Get an eyeful during outdoor movie nights

The majority of events are free. For paid events, reduced-price tickets for students and job seekers will be available.

We can’t wait to share all of these exciting things with you!

See you very soon at thecamp.
